An Audience of One
A conversation ends hours ago, but the mind is still conducting it. A small mistake becomes the opening argument in an imaginary trial. Someone’s brief response is examined for hidden meanings, possible disappointments, and consequences that haven’t occurred. By midnight, an ordinary Tuesday has produced enough material for a courtroom drama, complete with prosecution, witnesses, and a remarkably unforgiving judge.
What makes these private proceedings fascinating is how easily imagination acquires the authority of experience. A predicted reaction begins to feel like an actual rejection. A possible consequence becomes an impending certainty. Rehearsing the same scenario repeatedly creates familiarity, and familiarity can make even an invented outcome seem credible. Eventually the mind may be responding less to what happened than to the version it has constructed through repeated examination.
