Before Anything Has Happened
A surprising amount of suffering takes place in advance. A meeting scheduled for Thursday occupies Tuesday night. An unanswered message becomes the beginning of an imagined conflict. One uncertain outcome produces five possible futures, each rehearsed as though it has already occurred. The body can respond to these imagined events with remarkable seriousness, despite nothing outside the mind having changed.
Observe today how often anticipation becomes experience. Notice the conversations you rehearse, consequences you predict, and futures you briefly inhabit before reality has had a chance to arrive. Thought can generate an entire environment from possibility alone, then respond emotionally to the environment it created. By the time the actual event occurs, you may already have lived through several versions of it.
