A song from twenty years ago can feel better before the chorus even arrives. A childhood meal tastes different from the same recipe made by someone else. An old neighborhood can seem warmer in memory than it ever felt while living there. Familiar things rarely enter the present alone. They arrive carrying every previous encounter with them.
That history can make familiarity surprisingly persuasive. We may call something better, safer, truer, or more us without realizing how much of that judgment belongs to recognition rather than to what is actually in front of us. The strange part is that familiarity can survive even after the original conditions have changed. We recognize the feeling first and assume the thing producing it must still deserve the meaning we gave it years ago.
