Some things disappear the moment attention moves elsewhere. Others remain. You close twelve browser tabs and realize which piece of information actually mattered. A complicated conversation ends and one sentence follows you out of the room. Weeks of competing possibilities pass, yet one direction continues to make sense without requiring another argument in its favor.
The interesting distinction is not always between what captured your attention and what deserved it. Those can be entirely different things. Urgency is loud. Novelty is persuasive. Other people’s certainty can temporarily become our own. Yet after all of that passes through, certain ideas, questions, or directions remain strangely intact. They may not have won the competition for attention. They simply survived it.
