An effort can feel pointless right up until it works. Months of repetition become “discipline” after the breakthrough. A strange idea becomes “vision” once other people recognize it. Decisions that once looked questionable are retold as necessary steps after the outcome turns favorable. Success has a peculiar ability to reach backward and reorganize the meaning of everything that preceded it.

A song from twenty years ago can feel better before the chorus even arrives. A childhood meal tastes different from the same recipe made by someone else. An old neighborhood can seem warmer in memory than it ever felt while living there. Familiar things rarely enter the present alone. They arrive carrying every previous encounter with them.

A full calendar can look like progress. So can a string of new ideas, quick decisions, sudden opportunities, and the exhilarating feeling that everything is finally moving. Plans change. Doors open. One direction gives way to another. From inside that velocity, movement and direction can become difficult to distinguish.

An idea can become compelling long before reality has had anything to say about it. A new project already has an imagined future. A place you’ve never visited acquires an atmosphere from photographs. A person, opportunity, or possibility begins accumulating qualities that were never actually observed. Eventually the picture feels complete, even though much of it was assembled in the absence of evidence.
